Accommodation in Leiden

Whether you want a boutique hotel on a 17th-century canal, a four-star hotel next to the station or a budget bed close to the bars, Leiden has a room to suit. Rooms are usually cheaper than Amsterdam, and you are still within half an hour of the capital by train.

Which area should you stay in?

  • Historic centre (Pieterskwartier, Hooglandse Kerk): canal views, monuments at your door, best for a romantic or first-time stay.
  • Around Leiden Centraal: fastest access to Schiphol, Amsterdam and The Hague; ideal if Leiden is your base for day trips.
  • Leiden Bio Science Park and the ring: modern hotels, easier parking, good value for families and business travellers.
  • Katwijk and Noordwijk (15–25 minutes by bus): beach hotels within reach of the city and the bulb fields.

What to expect and what to pay

Expect roughly €90–€140 per night for a comfortable double outside high season, and €160–€250 in April, around graduation weeks and on 3 October. Dutch canal houses have steep, narrow staircases and few lifts — ask about ground-floor rooms if that matters to you. Breakfast is often charged separately, and city tax is added per person per night.

Booking tips for Leiden

  • Book well ahead for tulip season (late March to mid-May) and for 3 October — the city sells out.
  • Parking in the centre is expensive; choose a hotel with a parking deal or use the P+R at the edge of the city.
  • If you are visiting Keukenhof, a hotel within walking distance of Leiden Centraal saves you an hour a day.
