Leiden's Relief 2026 — 2 & 3 October

On 2 and 3 October Leiden celebrates and commemorates the lifting of the Spanish siege in 1574. The city fills with historic traditions, a large fairground, markets, music, family activities and the Grand Parade.

Plan your 3 October

Why Leiden celebrates 3 October

The siege of Leiden ended on 3 October 1574. The Sea Beggars brought herring and white bread to the starving city, while a pot of hutspot was found in an abandoned Spanish camp. These stories still shape the annual celebration.

The 3 October Association has organised the festivities since 1886. The traditional church service, herring and white bread, communal singing, parade, fairground and fireworks remain central to the event.
