Leiden's De Burcht fortress wall with the Hooglandse Kerk in the distance

De Burcht in Leiden

The castle mound was raised in the 9th and 10th centuries. A wooden fortification stood here in the 11th century; in the second half of the 12th century it was replaced by the stone ring wall that remains today.
