Old Observatory — stargazing in the Hortus

Leiden's Old Observatory, built in 1861 beside the Hortus botanicus, is the oldest surviving university observatory in the world. Under its rotating domes stand the original telescopes with which Leiden astronomers mapped the sky.

Visitor centre or telescope tour?

The visitor centre presents Plants & Planets, an exhibition connecting science, art and nature with questions about the origins of life. A walk-in tour takes you to a historic telescope in a dome beside the main building.

Private tours offer a different route, including the main building and rooftop telescopes. Choose the type of visit you want and check the university's current programme and booking information.

Plan your visit

A walk-in tour takes about an hour. Follow the meeting-point instructions in your booking; the university explains where visitors arriving from the Hortus should report. Check access requirements before booking a dome visit.
