Jean Pesijnhof in Leiden

Jean Pesijnhof is a lived-in almshouse courtyard founded in 1683 beside Pieterskerk, on a site closely connected with the English Pilgrims' years in Leiden.

What you see at Jean Pesijnhof

Behind the gate is a quiet courtyard of small homes around a garden. This is not a museum: visitors are guests in the living environment of today's residents.

The history of Jean Pesijnhof

Jean Pesijn and Marie de Lannoy founded the almshouse in 1683. Homes used by the Pilgrim congregation around pastor John Robinson had previously stood here; Robinson died on the site in 1625.

Visiting Jean Pesijnhof: practical tips

The entrance is at Kloksteeg 21. Visit during daytime, keep voices low and do not photograph windows or residents. Combine the courtyard with Pieterskerk, Gravensteen and the Pilgrim Museum.
