The Latin School in Leiden where Rembrandt studied

Rembrandt walk in Leiden — birthplace, school and first studio

Rembrandt was born in Leiden in 1606 and trained here before moving to Amsterdam. This self-guided 2.5-kilometre walk connects seven places from his early life. Allow 75 to 90 minutes without a museum visit; the starting point is an eight-minute walk from Leiden Centraal.

Route at a glance

  • Start at Weddesteeg and finish at Museum De Lakenhal.
  • Distance: approximately 2.5 kilometres through the historic centre.
  • Duration: 75 to 90 minutes without a museum visit.
  • Expect cobbles, bridges and some narrow pavements.

Weddesteeg, Molen de Put and Rembrandt Bridge

Begin in Weddesteeg. Rembrandt's birth house no longer exists, but a plaque marks the place where he grew up in the Van Rijn miller's family. Continue to Molen de Put beside Galgewater, then cross Rembrandt Bridge for a view of the mill and Morspoort.

This waterside stop gives useful context to the edge of the city where Rembrandt spent his youth.

Latin School, Pieterskerk and the young artist's studio

Walk via Rapenburg to the Latin School in Lokhorststraat. Its historic gate and façade can be seen from the street. Continue to Pieterskerk and Langebrug 89, where Jacob van Swanenburg taught the young Rembrandt.

Young Rembrandt Studio tells this story through film and reproductions. Check current opening hours before visiting.

Finish at Museum De Lakenhal

Continue via Breestraat and Oude Singel to Museum De Lakenhal. Its collection places Rembrandt's Leiden years alongside work by his contemporaries. Allow extra time and check tickets with the museum if you plan to go inside.

From the museum it is roughly a ten-minute walk back to Leiden Centraal.
