Leiden City Hall — listed monument: Leiden City Hall combines a Renaissance façade on Breestraat

Leiden City Hall

Leiden City Hall combines a Renaissance façade on Breestraat, built in 1595–1596, with the twentieth-century civic building around Stadhuisplein.

What you see at Leiden City Hall

From Breestraat, study the rebuilt Renaissance façade with its staircase, tower, sculptures and inscriptions. The building continues around Stadhuisplein near the Nieuwe Rijn.

The history of Leiden City Hall

Leiden's town hall has stood here since the Middle Ages. Much of it was lost in the 1929 fire; the façade was rebuilt and the building behind it was entirely new. Elements of the façade recall the Siege and Relief of Leiden in 1574.

Visiting Leiden City Hall: practical tips

The façade can always be viewed from outside. The inner courtyard is accessible during building opening hours, while the Stadhuis itself is used for specific appointments, council meetings, weddings and city activities. Public municipal services are at the Stadskantoor on Bargelaan.
