Doelenpoort in Leiden

Doelenpoort is an elaborately carved sandstone gate from 1645, crowned by Saint George defeating the dragon.

What you see at Doelenpoort

The gate stands between Doelengracht and the university grounds. Look for the coats of arms, ornaments and sculpture above the passage; it is a compact but memorable photo stop on the way to Rapenburg.

The history of Doelenpoort

City architect Arent van 's-Gravesande designed the entrance to the Saint George and Saint Sebastian shooting grounds, where Leiden's civic guards trained. The gate survived the later demolition of much of the complex.

Visiting Doelenpoort: practical tips

Doelenpoort can be viewed freely from the public space beside the Arsenal and Doelengracht. Combine it with Bibliotheca Thysiana, the Academy Building and a walk along Rapenburg.
